One of the largest players in the logistics sector, OMSAN Logistics, has taken action to establish a port similar to Tanger Med with the aim of turning Türkiye into a “super logistics hub”. OMSAN Logistics has also put all port opportunities around the world on its radar.
OMSAN Logistics, one of the flagship companies of the OYAK Group, has taken action both to realize its own growth plans and to make Türkiye the logistics hub of its region. OYAK’s decision to prioritize logistics over the next five years is a key factor underpinning OMSAN’s readiness to make major strategic moves. OMSAN will be the OYAK Group’s safe harbor on the world stage as it seeks to become a regional and then a global power.
At the heart of OMSAN’s growth plan lies a strategy to have a say in global ports. With this objective in mind, OMSAN Chairman of the Board Ergun Arıburnu made his first visit to Morocco’s Tanger Med Port, which has become the largest port in the Mediterranean and ranks among the world’s top 20 ports.
“An indispensable project for Türkiye”
Signaling new investments and visionary steps that will move Türkiye’s logistics capacity up the global league, Arıburnu said that thanks to Türkiye’s increasing trade volume, growing automotive exports, and rail–sea integration, particularly in the Marmara Region, Türkiye has the potential to establish a “logistics super hub” similar to Tanger Med. Noting that such a hub is an indispensable project for Türkiye, which aims to become the “Logistics Base” of its region, Arıburnu said, “Türkiye has the potential to establish such a hub under OMSAN’s leadership.”
Emphasizing that OYAK is one of the most dynamic institutional forces of the Turkish economy, Arıburnu continued, “Of course, initiatives and projects of this magnitude need to be led by strong institutions like OYAK. We aspire to build a port similar to Tanger Med. Because we currently operate one of Türkiye’s largest and most valuable ports, Port Yarımca, together with our Japanese partners. We have a uniquely strong track record in this area. The transformation guided by OYAK is the strongest institutional will that will carry our country to this goal. We want to evaluate this and similar port projects. Our radar is also open to opportunities that may arise globally.”
Logistics is not a preference, it is a vital necessity
Pointing to the importance of the logistics sector for countries, Arıburnu drew attention to the fact that the determinant of national competitiveness in production and trade processes is now logistics and potential, saying, “Today, what determines competition is not cost; it is speed, integration, and supply chain security. For this reason, it is a strategic imperative for Türkiye to invest in integrated ports, strong maritime capabilities, and rail integration. That is why logistics is no longer a preference, but a vital necessity for a country’s economy.”
Sharing his analysis and impressions of Tanger Med, Chairman Arıburnu said, “An industrial and logistics area totaling 5,000 hectares, a developed investment zone of 3,000 hectares, and an economic volume exceeding 17 billion dollars created with more than 1,400 investors clearly show why Tanger Med has entered the world league.” Arıburnu added, “As world trade is being reshaped, this structure at the intersection of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East is no longer just a port; it is a strategic platform that changes the regional distribution of power in production and logistics. This is the largest automotive production capacity in Africa and the Middle East; it offers an integrated production ecosystem with electronics, textiles, aviation, and agricultural industries. Global connectivity is the cornerstone of this success. Access to 70 countries and more than 180 ports; being able to reach China in 20 days, Rotterdam in 3 days, and the Americas in 6 days; has positioned this structure at the very center of the global supply chain.”
“Türkiye will become the crossroads of global trade”
Stressing that Tanger Med is, in every respect, a correct and realistic model for Türkiye, Arıburnu concluded as follows: “What we actually see here is a concrete example of how a country can create a major leap when it integrates production, logistics, and global connectivity into a single strategy. This model bears a strong parallel to Türkiye’s vision of becoming a logistics hub. From the Middle Corridor to the Development Road, from the Zengezur Corridor to our port investments, the on-the-ground counterpart of all the strategies we are pursuing can be read very clearly right here. With its geopolitical advantages, OYAK’s long-term investments, OMSAN’s multimodal operational strength, Türkiye’s 300 billion dollars of infrastructure investments made over the last 23 years, and its growing export economy, Türkiye stands on the threshold of a new era in logistics. Türkiye’s logistics ascent is now an undeniable reality. With the right investments, integrated ports, and smart logistics networks, our country will become the new crossroads of global trade.”
